Amsterdam Update and a Call to Action

So we are back from a great trip from Amsterdam! Definitely laying off the cheese, salami and wine for a while but we couldn’t have asked for a better trip!! If I may say so myself, Jill’s Legacy was a HUGE hit at the conference. We shook things up while we were there and let people know we were out to change the face of Lung Cancer…NOW! One of the biggest successes of the conference was being filmed for Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week. Jill’s Legacy is going to be one of the highlighted non-profits for this event happening in April 2012. We were asked to share Jill’s story and what we think the future will bring for Jill’s Legacy. It was great stuff.

We also stirred the pot up a little bit at the Advocacy in Action meeting that we attended along with the BJALCF staff. After an hour and forty minutes of talking about smoking and smoking cessation Ms. K.C. Oakley took matters in to her own hands and stood up and said, “Do you not think that by talking about smoking and how we should prevent teens from smoking to lower the rates of lung cancer we are not just re-enforcing the stigma?”……long silence and then a flurry of responses. Bonnie also went to the microphone and said something very similar. Yes, we all agree smoking is bad, it causes ALL kinds of cancer, but smoking cessation is not what we need to be focused on. We need to focus on curing lung cancer for ALL people. We need to stop associating Lung Cancer with smoking and start looking for a cure. Every time we mention smoking in the same sentence as Lung Cancer we are just reinforcing the stigma even more. This must stop! Bonnie quoted one patient who put this into words perfectly, ” Smoking isn’t what gave me lung cancer but it’s what’s going to kill me”. Because smoking is so closely associated with Lung Cancer it gets not funding….let’s make a change NOW!

So think about it…what have you done TODAY to change the face of Lung Cancer? Act now….we don’t have time to waste!
